Roopkund located in the state of Uttarakhand in India is a renowned glacial lake. The lake is famous due to more than 5 hundred human skeletons located at the edges of the lake. It is situated within the Himalayas and is situated at an altitude of 4,800 metres. Roopkund is situated inside the Chamoli district of Garhwal. It is among the top places to go trekking within Garhwal. It is close to hills like Nainital in India and Kathgodam. It is located 217 kilometers away from Nainital and 235 kilometers far from Kathgodam, Roopkund is one of the top adventure spots for those living in the country as well as those who travel from overseas. Roopkund is located within the midst of Trishul massif, is also referred to as the “mystery Lake”. Human skeletons are found on the banks of the lake. It is believed that they are part of that of the Palaeolithic age.
They could be remains of heroes who fought in this area in early days. Alongside the skeletons belonging to humans, you will also discover the skeletal structures of animals, including horses. There is evidence that suggests these skeletons date back to the 12th century until around the year 1515. Experts believe that the deaths of many people living in the area was a result of landslides or blizzards, or an outbreak. Human bones were found during 1942 through H K Madhwal, who was a Nanda Devi Game reserve ranger.

Roopkund trekis located in the Chamoli district of Uttarakhand, the trek starts from Lohajung, and the nearest main railway station in the district is the Kathgodam station.
If you are travelling from big metro cities, you can reach Delhi via air, train or bus. The basic route for travel isDehliàKathgodamàLohajung
After Reaching Kathgodam,The Hidden Himalaya team would arrange for transportation from Kathgodam railway station to Lohajunga .Our vehicles leave between 6 am to 7 am so make sure to reach by then.
By Train: If you are travelling from Delhi, your first option would be to take the Ranikhet Express from Delhi. The train departures at 10.40 pm from Old Delhi Railway Station and reaches Kathgodam at around 5.30 am if you would prefer an overnight journey or you could take the the Uttar sampark Kranti train from Old Delhi that leaves at 4:00pm and would reach Kathgodamby 10:40pm.If you are taking the day train, Uttar sampark Kranti then you would have to stay overnight at Kathgodam.
From Dehardun catch the Doon Express that will departure from Dehradun at 10:30 pm at will arrive at Kathgodam at 7:10 pm.
By Bus: Hop on to an overnight bus from Delhi to Kathgodam, regular buses leave from Anand Bihar ISBT mostly around midnight. You could also find some Volvo buses that leave around 9 pm. Try to reach early at ISBT to get yourself a seat as there are no prior booking or online bookings for Buses to Kathgodam.
